  • How do I sell photos to a stock company such as Getty Images?

Posted by admin on February 8th, 2010 and filed under sell photos | 4 Comments »

I went on their website but couldn’t seem to find how to sell photos rather than buy them

Getty Images is very picky about who (not the images as much as who) they let sign up. There are lots of long time photographers who can’t get on with them.

That being said, the links you need are :http://corporate.gettyimages.com/source/contributors/
    and http://contributors.gettyimages.com/workwithus/index.asp

There are lots of other stock photo agencies out there as well. Most of the reputable ones require hundreds (sometimes thousands) of high quality images for a photographer to be represented.

There are also micro-stock sites for smaller collections. iStockPhoto is one of these and is actually owned by Getty Images. They sometimes have lower standards and almost always sell images for rock bottom prices.

First get your language right. You license your image not sell them.

It is almost impossible to get into Getty and Corbis. They require a lot of images before they consider you and from that they take a very small fraction of images. If you do you better make sure you read the contract and look out for yourself. They also produce their own work so you will be competing with their work. If they have the choice to get 100% of the profit to perhaps 50% they will market the images they produce first.

I belong to a photographers co-op. Images are still edited to keep the collection professional. It is called http://www.MIRA.com
Stock is a long term business. You will not see income for a long time. If you do you are lucky. Most images do not sell at all. Below I list a few option where you can start to lisence your images.

If you’re an amatuer photographer (even if you’ve got great photos) then don’t even bother. It’s established pros that they’re looking for.
That said, maybe a smaller stock photo company would be worth a try.
